The Ras Al Khaimah Municipality has auctioned off 89 vehicles kept in impoundment for six months with no one to pay due fines or collect them back. These vehicles were impounded for being offered for sale in public places with no licence for such commercial activities in violation of set rules and regulations.
Shaimaa Al Tunaiji, director of public health in the RAK Municipality, said they shall intensify inspection raids at public places, markets, and residential areas to curb this phenomenon. "Some people turn deaf ears to repetitive warnings and are still selling vehicles in public places, roundabouts, squares and roads."
Any unclaimed vehicle after six months of impoundment shall be auctioned off as per law, she warned. "The 89 impounded vehicles auctioned off were left unattended and offered for sale at critical and busy areas."
The owners of the vehicles with warning letters were given a grace period of 10 days to remove, shift or clean them, she said.
In October this year, the RAK Police launched an intensive campaign against abandoned vehicles in the emirate, and up to 121 of these were impounded across the emirate in just two weeks.
Ten traffic patrols have been specified in the morning shift just to spot any abandoned vehicle in the emirate.
Maisun Mohammed, acting director of public resources department, RAK Police, said all the impounded vehicles are shifted to the impoundment yard at Al Saedi area on 30 recovery vehicles operated by the Lulu transport company.
"A thorough database of the chassis' numbers of all impounded vehicles is prepared so that they can be easily sorted out, tracked, and collected back as per due legal procedures."
All the vehicles left without number plates are immediately impounded and shifted to the Al Saedi yard, she pointed out. "These vehicles, if not claimed within a grace period of six months, will be sold as scrap."
