The Ras Al Khaimah Holy Quran Award has increased its cash rewards by a whopping 170 per cent - from Dh720,000 to Dh1.95 million.
Shaikh Saqr bin Khalid bin Humaid Al Qasimi, Chairman of the RAK Holy Quran Establishment, said the move is aimed to encourage the memorisation and recitation of the Holy Quran.
"Three new categories have been added to the 16th edition of the formerly six-category award: 'Converts contest', 'Quran Virtues Hadiths', and 'Quran contest for imams and muezzins'," he said.
Registration for participating in the award was opened in late October. Ahmed Al Shehi, Director-General of the RAK Holy Quran Establishment, said applications would be accepted only from 20 Quran study centres and 45 mosques in RAK. "November 20 has been set as the deadline for application in the now nine-category award." The award is held annually under the patronage of His Highness Shaikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah.
Speaking to Khaleej Times, Al Shehi said the initial qualifying tests would be held in December and the competitors will sit for their final examinations in January 2016.
"The prudent leadership believes in the important role of the Holy Quran in building a faithful and strong young generation who can serve their country and maintain its achievements.
"Participation in the award is open to only RAK-based Emiratis and residents. Contestants need to memorise three parts of the Holy Quran to be eligible for participation," said Al Shehi.
The establishment has distributed thousands of brochures about the award across the emirate, he underlined. "These feature the categories of the contest, as well as registration and tests timings."
