The dense fog blanketing the entire nation has been blamed for only one per cent of the total traffic accidents reported across the UAE, according to police experts.
Keeping a safety space, reducing speed limit, and observing lane rule are so critical at all times, particularly during foggy weather, Col Ali Saeed Al Alkeem, Director of Traffic and Patrols Department with Ras Al Khaimah Police, told the live 'Watchful Eye' radio programme. "Overtaking is one of the main reasons behind so many accidents."
Col Al Alkeem added that it's true the dense fog has totally or partially hampered visibility on the roads of the emirate.
Major-General Mohammed Saif Al Zaffin, Assistant Chief Commandant of the Dubai Police for Operations Affairs, said up to 29 people were injured and one was killed in traffic accidents across the country in December 2016.
Brigadier Ghaith Hassan Al Zaabi, Director of the Directorate General for Traffic Coordination in the Ministry of Interior, said all drivers need to be extra cautious during fog.
"Official records show that Ras Al Khaimah saw 26 traffic accidents in December due to fog while Umm Al Quwain recorded 12 accidents.
Lt-Col Saeed Obaid bin Aran, Director of Traffic and Patrols Department of the UAQ Police Directorate General, said the foggy weather has lowered the visibility to less than 100 metres, mainly in the early hours of the day, obstructing smooth driving and leading to several traffic accidents."
