Sindhi community to usher in new year in style
The large, prosperous Sindhi community in Dubai will hold celebrations to mark its new year at the Shaikh Rashid Auditorium at the Indian High School tomorrow evening.
Addressing a Press conference to announce the programme, Ram Buxani, Executive Vice Chairman of ITL Group, said yesterday that the actual day on which the new year fell was celebrated fell last month but the community decided to postpone the celebrations in view of the war in Iraq.
Titled "Raat Cheti Chand Ji", the highlight of the event will be "Theeu Na Juda Jani Mukhan", a ballet by Anila Sunder, a well-known Kathak dancer who has performed in Japan, West Africa, Scandinavian countries, UK, and the US.
Anila will be accompanied by a total of 33 artistes, seven of whom have been flown in from Mumbai, while the remaining 26 are local artistes who received training from the international performer on her earlier visits to the UAE.
"The ballet revolves around the issue of a non-resident Sindhi man and his wife, whom he has left with his parents back in his country. It is a tussle between the ideology of the man who wants to earn money as against that of his wife who is lonely and wants love," Anila explained about the ballet.
She said that the issue touches the heart of the audience since many people can relate to it and the musical presentation makes it more interesting.
Mr Buxani said that the Sindhi community was scattered since 1947, though it has succeeded in making a place for itself in the Indian society. The event will also feature Pavan Kumar, a popular singer and composer.
