The municipality announced that in collaboration with agricultural companies, it had also launched a public awareness campaign, focussing on shopping malls and neighbourhoods in the city.

The municipality aims at expanding the city’s per capita green area to 23.4 square metres by the end of 2011.

“Preparation of a manual on Green Roofs has been completed, which includes application study of the system and construction and environmental standards that must be met during the application, in addition to the conditions, incentives, and the licensing mechanism,” a statement issued by the municipality said. “It also includes a list of the types of plants suitable for cultivation on the surface and soils that are suitable and their technical specifications,” the statement said.

“The manual explains the needs of different plants for irrigation so that the plants that require minimal maintenance are chosen.”

Farhan Al Marzouqi, Head of Corporate Marketing and Exhibitions Section, Dubai Municipality, said models will be displayed to show how the green roofs will work and the public can participate at home. Leaflets will also be provided.

The model will travel across the emirate with a focus on residential areas in order to cover the largest segment of the community, Al Marzouqi added. “This will continue for a period of 12 months.”

The model will be displayed at Mall of the Emirates for the first two weeks, followed by Dubai Festival Centre.

The municipality has formed a special committee for the preparation of technical and application studies to establish the green roofs that will apply to all buildings, new and existing, in the emirate. The application of green roofs is optional for residential villas.

For buildings under construction, a proposal must be submitted by the owner and any project consultation to the municipality to ensure the initiative’s incorporation.
