One of the most relevant movies of Hollywood’s golden age, Victor Fleming’s 1939 war epic Gone with the Wind, has spawned countless TV specials, tourist attractions, and massive box office numbers. Taking into account the inflation/economic status during the 1930s, Gone with the Wind was the biggest blockbuster in cinema history.

December 15, 2014 marked the 75th anniversary of the movie’s release and to commemorate the Academy award-winning film, it was screened at various theatres across the globe. Good news for movie buffs in the UAE is that Gone with the Wind is appearing in movie theatres in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

It will be screened every Monday, Wednesday and Friday for a period of four weeks starting from December 22 in Vox Cinemas in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Since the movie is nearly four hours with an intermission of about 10 minutes, Vox will only have one show per day at 7.30pm.

Jacques Kruger, General Manager, Tanweer Vox Media said: “It is the 75th anniversary of the biggest movie of all time, both in terms of budget and box office (when adjusted for inflation). The UAE has come a long way over the last few years in terms of cinema (going) and is one of the fastest growing theatrical markets in the world, so for us it was the logical next step to introduce the UAE cinemagoers to Gone with the Wind.”

Adapted from the Pulitzer-winning 1936 novel by Margaret Mitchell, the movie is a love story set in the backdrop of America’s civil war of 1861.

Screening the movie is also the cinema’s attempt to reintroduce classics to youngsters.

“Bringing the classics back is a costly affair. There are so many classics that we would love the UAE audiences to experience on the big screen (for the first time), so we thought we’ll start with the biggest one of them all, find our audience, and then take from there,” said Kruger. He added: “We feel that the market has reached a level of maturity where the need for classic fare like Gone with the Wind on the big screen, presented with the latest in digital projection and audio technology, will be satisfied.” Local moviegoers have been very enthusiastic to the re-release of the move in theatre.

Ankit Ojha, movie blogger for ‘Cinema Elite’ said: “It’s fantastic and a great opportunity to see what exactly was presented to viewers back in the day. The best thing about re-releases is that a lot more people will be acquainted to classics and I think the release of Gone with the Wind is the beginning of something very exciting.”

Another cinema blogger and reviewer Anastasiya Leliukh said: “Even though I have seen the movie several times, it will be amazing to see the movie on big screen again. They have to do things like this more often.”

Kruger added: “The response has been very enthusiastic so far. People have seen the poster and trailer in cinemas and followed our tease campaign on-line, so the phones are ringing non-stop.”

Plans to revive classics

“We would like to bring back “old” classics like Citizen Kane, Casablanca and Psycho to “new” classics including The Godfather, Jaws, The Exorcist and Back to the Future. It is any movie lovers dream and, of course, we’ll also rely on our customers to let us know which classics they would like to see again on the big screen. The opportunities are limitless.”

Kruger said: “Watching classic movies gives each one of us a true sense of how far we have come over the years, how much things have changed and makes us appreciate how crucial change is to progress while keeping us entertained at the same time. It also makes us appreciate why they say: “They just don’t make them like they use to.”-dhanusha@khaleejtimes.com
