A 35-year-old worker, who assaulted a man and unintentionally caused his death, was sentenced to two years in jail by a Dubai court on Thursday.
The Indian suspect denied the assault charge at the Court of First Instance. He also confessed that he consumed liquor without a permit. The court also ordered his deportation after serving his jail time and paying a Dh2,000 fine on the alcohol charge.
The incident took place on January 18 this year, and was reported at Al Qusais police station.
A policeman said he was on patrol duty with a colleague when they received a report about an assault incident at 11 pm. "Our information told us that the assault happened at a labour accommodation in Al Muhaisnah. The supervisor there told us the victim had been rushed to hospital."
The 24-year-old Pakistani supervisor said during the public prosecution investigation that he saw the victim lying unconscious. "He was unconscious while paramedics were trying to give him first aid. The defendant was standing nearby and was shortly taken into custody."
A 25-year-old Indian worker recalled that he saw the two men having a verbal argument which developed into a brawl. "I left the room to inform the supervisor. When I came back I found the door open and a crowd of workers. The victim was being taken care of by paramedics."
According to the forensic report, the victim had heart problems which worsened during the fight and led to his death.
The worker can appeal the ruling within 15 days.
