Drug abuse begins during adolescence, stressing the need for parents to keep a watch on their children's lives, according to a two-day forum began on Monday.
The two-day Hemaya International Forum on Drug Issues - themed 'Foreseeing the Future of the Global Combat of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances: Predictions, Preparations and Prevention Strategies for 2030 - being held under the patronage of Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of Dubai Executive Council, was inaugurated by Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, in Dubai on Monday.
Lt. General Saif Abdullah Al Shafar, under-secretary of the Ministry of Interior; Maj. Gen. Abdullah Khalifa Al Marri, Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police and chairman of the higher committee for Hemaya International Programme; Lieutenant General Dhahi Khalfan Tamim, deputy chief of police and public security in Dubai, and chairman of the National Anti-narcotics Council (NAC), and a number of officers and specialists in the field were present.

Delivering the keynote address titled 'Protection from Drug Abuse', Lieutenant General Dhahi Khalfan Tamim, deputy chief of police and public security in Dubai, and chairman of the National Anti-narcotics Council (NAC), said that the number of drug accused arrested in the country has seen a rise of 40.6 per cent since the establishment of NAC in 2016. In Dubai, 199 suspects were arrested last year compared to 90 in 2016.
He also noted that studies have shown that drug abuse begins during adolescence, stressing the need for parents to keep a watch on their children's lives and follow up their affairs and stay alert to the threats that may surround them.
He talked about the safety mechanism against drugs, which start from the border guards and customs, followed by the roles of police, family and educational institutions in raising awareness about the dangers of drugs, as well as issues related to treatment and rehabilitation and the role of traditional and modern media.
Brigadier Eid Mohammed Thani Hareb, director of general department of anti-narcotics at Dubai Police, has delivered the opening speech in which he stressed that the issue of drugs continues to pose a great challenge for all governments and organisations concerned with combating drugs.
Lauding the great measures taken by the Dubai Police to exhibit an international model of drugs control, he said: "The theme of Hemaya Forum this year develops a roadmap for a safer, more secure and more stable future."
The forum discussed topics related to drugs and its effect on communities, suggested solutions and explored ways to combat and prevent drug addiction. Future Foresight, Field and Preventive, Sanitary & Medicinal, and Social & Economic are the four areas of topics the forum will discuss in two days. Besides, specialised workshops on various topics will also be held on the sidelines of the forum.
