Some parents say they would much rather opt for the school run themselves rather than using the school bus
The competition, hosted by the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, or Cima, for undergraduates with a passion for business, is in its sixth year. A record number of 22 teams from around the world had competed representing their respective countries as national winners in the first and knock-out round of this global final.
Other teams making it to round two of the global finals were New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Poland, Australia and South Africa.
In round two, the remaining teams, each consisting of four undergraduates, must develop and present revised recommendations to the judges based on the new set of business variables. This is designed to test their ability to respond to change, their flexibility in approach, critical thinking and ability to problem solve under pressure. The teams were given four hours to come up with new recommendations and before presenting to the judges.
At the same time, the judges named the three finalists in the individual category for GBC Future Business Leader: Sizwe Nxumalo from South Africa, Julie Niblock from Ireland and Prachi Mehta from the Middle East team. They were selected from within all the competing teams as individuals with presence and the ability to be a future business leader. From the original 88 participants competing in 22 different teams, the three will face tough interviews with Cima managing director Andrew Harding, Tesco Southeast Asia internal audit manager Szilard Brenner, and Deepesh Lad, FCMA, CGMA finance chief operating officer of Barclays Asia Pacific.
“We are thrilled that our Middle East team has made it through the first round. As a nation we are behind them all the way. We also congratulate all the teams that made it to the global final. They all have the potential to shape business in the future. This competition, besides highlighting global business talent, also serves to provide encouragement to young business people to follow their dreams,” Cima head of GCC Geetu Ahuja said.
Cima would like to thank its global partner Barclays, Unilever Sri Lanka, Achievers Lanka Business School, SriLankan Airlines and Mount Lavinia Hotel for their support.
