Etihad and Virgin Australia forged a ten-year strategic partnership 21 months ago.

“This new agreement expands our successful partnership with Virgin Australia which already provides our guests access to Australia and elsewhere on our combined network of over 150 destinations,” Etihad chief strategy and planning officer Kevin Knight said. “Working together with our partner Virgin Australia, we continue to find new ways to serve our guests and create value for each of our airlines.”

The aircraft is configured with 33 flat bed seats in business class and 328 seats in economy class. The return flights will be operated as normal using Etihad’s existing daily EY411 and EY418 flight codes, respectively. Etihad Airways flies daily from Abu Dhabi to Kuala Lumpur using a Boeing 777-300ER aircraft.

Omani cadet pilots welcomed

Meanwhile, Etihad has welcomed 18 Omani cadet pilots to its expanding flying programme as part of a recently launched recruitment drive in Oman.

The Etihad Airways cadet pilot programme was launched in June 2007, in partnership with the Horizon Flight Academy, and now boasts 161 cadets currently training to become fully-qualified pilots.

“The recruitment, training and development of cadet pilots is of the utmost importance to Etihad Airways. We are thrilled to welcome the Omani cadets and we are confident that they will play a vital role in maintaining our position as a leading global airline,” Etihad chief operations officer Capt Richard Hill said.

As part of their training programme, cadet pilots have to complete 750 hours of classroom tuition and 205 hours flight training in single and multi-engine aircraft to gain the frozen Airline Transport Pilots Licence.

During this time they also have to pass the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority’s theoretical knowledge and flying exams.
