The popular championship has established its credentials as one of the ‘majors’ on the UAE golfing calendar since its inception in 2000, and this year is no exception with almost 100 teams, each comprising two players, competing for honours in this 36-hole event.
Sponsored by Al Dobowi, the championship follows the tricky Greensomes format where both players on a team tee off, the best of the two tee balls is selected and that ball is then played on an alternate-shot basis until holed. The first round will be played over the Faldo course with the final round concluding on Saturday over the Majlis. Last year the team of Glyn Sowerby and Shashi Raghavan combined effectively to win the championship with a 36-hole tally of 13-under-par 131.
Surender Singh Kandhari, managing director of Al Dobowi and former captain of Emirates Golf Club, said: ‘We are delighted to see that the Championship has once again filled to capacity with almost 200 golfers taking part over two fantastic courses at Emirates Golf Club. “The format of the tournament is quite interesting where both players on a team have to click as a unit. If scores from the previous editions are an indication, we can one again expect a fiercely-fought competition. I wish all players the very best and hope they will enjoy their golf over the next two days.”
