Sharjeel shines for Phoenix

Sharjeel Khan came up with fine performances in two games to put Phoenix Medicine on course for a spot in the knockout stage of the UBL Twenty20 Trophy.

Sharjeel Khan’s exploits helped Phoenix Medicine end Yogi Group’s unbeaten run with a five-wicket win and then scored a comprehensive nine-wicket victory over Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) Blues in Group A at the Shaikh Zayed International Cricket Stadium.

The twin wins gave them four points and they are placed joint second along with Nissan Al Masaood and with a game in hand.

In the first game, batting first Yogi Group put on 154 for nine with Shaimon Butt top scoring with 59. Rohan Mustafa took three for 40, while Asad Ali picked up two for 26.

Sharjeel Khan scored 58 with the help of seven boundaries and three sixes. He was also involved in a 100-run partnership for the second wicket with Abdul Shakoor.

Shakoor made 52. Baber Rahman picked two for 21, while Ambay Parwatkar took two for 30.

In the second game, Emirates Cricket Board Blues were all out for 108 with Chirah Suri making 26. Asif Mumtaz took two for five, while Rohan Mustafa picked up two for 21. Ali Afzal took two for 27.

And Sharjeel Khan was ruthless in the chase, smashing an unbeaten 77 from 27 balls with 11 boundaries and five sixes. The game was wrapped up in eight overs.

New Medical Centre notched up their fourth win by defeating Seven Seas Strikers to complete Group D unbeaten in four games.

Niresh Fernando anchored the NMC innings with a top score of 52 not out to lead them to a four-wicket triumph over Seven Seas Strikers.

He hit half-a-dozen fours in NMC’s 107 for six in 17.2 overs.

Emirates Cricket Board Blues 108 all out in 19.3 overs (Chirag Suri 26, Asif Mumtaz 2-5, Rohan Mustafa 2-21, Ali Afzal 2-27) lost to Phoenix Medicine 114 for 1 in 8 overs (Sharjeel Khan 77 not out).

Seven Seas Strikers 103 for 9 in 20 overs (Salman Afzal 39, Shadeep Silva 2-26) lost to New Medical Centre 107 for 6 in 17.2 overs (Niresh Fernando 52 not out, Akbar Rana 2-18, Shafqat Ali 2-23).

Royal Gymkhana 144 for 8 in 20 overs (Omair Qadeer 53 not out, Kashif Mahmood 31, Imran Khan 2-19, Nafees Ahmed 2-24) lost to Abu Dhabi Airport Technology 147 for 5 in 19.5 overs (Zeeshan Khan 40, Waseem Shoukat 31, Imran Khan 31, Ahmed Nadeem 27, Asif Ghouri 3-38).
