Negligence and recklessness are the prime reasons why we are registering rising number of cases of Covid-19 infections everyday globally. Governments around the world are suggesting social distancing, taking precautions, wearing masks.
The UAE is doing an incredible job at taking care of the residents, and putting in place measures that can contain the spread of the virus. People in the UAE are cooperating by adhering to the government directive. There is discipline here.
In India, too, the central and state governments have waged an all out war against the disease. The nationwide lockdown is in place. However, indiscipline among people is visible. Some Indians are still going round and meeting people. Unwanted meetings should be avoided.
I do agree there are many people in India that survive on their daily wages. And then there are taxi drivers, auto drivers, labourers, small restauranteurs who have been hit. But the basic idea of following rigid discipline was to contain the spread of the virus, so that Indian government would not have to extend the lockdown.
Now day by day the numbers are increasing globally and many cities that are in lockdown might continue to remain so for longer. There is no way out except for prevention.
Besides, it is appalling to read about violence meted out to doctors, volunteers, health workers. Why are such people being abused when all they are trying to do is help people?
People should cooperate with the governments and follow the advice religiously. This is the only way around at the moment. -K. Ragavan, Bengaluru, India
