A British couple is stranded in Singapore for being unable to pay off $180,000 (Dh660,000 approx) medical bills after their son was born prematurely at 24 weeks.
Chloe Wilkinson, 30, and her partner, Patraic Walsh-Kavanagh, 27, work in Australia and were on a stopover in Singapore before they flew back home to share the news. But, Wilkinson went into labour whilst in Singapore and delivered a boy on February 26, weighing just 1.9 lbs. The baby named, Lorcan, has since been in intensive care unit.
The couple said their travel insurance does not cover pregnancy, and under Singaporean laws they cannot work there to pay off the mounting medical bills, BBC reported.
"We are on our own, a 14-hour flight away from our family and friends, and it has been a very difficult start to parenthood whilst Lorcan remains in hospital," Wilkinson said.
Walsh-Kavanagh said doctors told it was not possible for Wilkinson to make a connecting flight as she had an infection and had began dilating. The stranded couple has created a crowdfunding page on GoFundMe so that they can fly back home. "Flying commercially has been deemed too dangerous," the GoFundMe, created by Walsh-Kavanagh's sister, Aoife-Lourdes Valentino, states.
The couple is currently staying in a shared flat close to the hospital where their son is admitted.
