It's a tale of canine horror that's becoming too rampant in India.
A 68-year-old woman was mauled to death by two pet Rottweilers in Avadi on Thursday. The dogs disfigured the victim's face and almost completely ripped out her hair.
Gowri, a resident of Govardhanagiri in Avadi, was pounced upon by the domesticated dogs around 1.30am as she went to the terrace of the house she shared with her 82-year-old husband Chandrasekar, their son Santhosh and his family, investigators were quoted as saying in The Times of India report.
Santhosh and his wife lived on the first floor of the house. The two dogs - aged one and five - were raised by Santhosh. His mother suffered from depression and rarely left the house, an investigating officer said.
"Santhosh said his mother was probably not aware that the dogs were on the terrace," he added. "Other members of the family were asleep when the dogs attacked the woman."
Nobody heard her screaming or raising an alarm.
A neighbour did hear Gowri moaning softly around 4.30am but she habitually murmured to herself and he did not think anything was amiss, the officer said.
It is being believed that the canines attacked the woman when they saw her coming to the terrace.
The family hailed from Kerala, but has been in Avadi for more than four decades now.
Gowri was found in a pool of blood on the terrace at 6am. Blood was found on the paws and fangs of the pets.
The Avadi Police have registered a case of unnatural death.
On September 13, 2016, two Rottweilers had savaged their 56-year-old owner, Kirubakaran, an assistant to a Government Railway Police officer, in Kattupakkam village, Vellore district.
