When 5-year-old Katelynn Hardee, from California, discovered her classmates were unable to pay off their lunch debts, she decided to act.
The kindergartner started selling hot cocoa and cookies outside her home and raised $80 that helped clear lunch debts of 123 students.
Hardee, a student at Breeze Hill Elementary School in Vista in California, was saddened when she overheard a parent talking about struggling to pay for after school programs.
"She started asking me a lot of questions and I just tried to explain to her that sometimes people aren't as fortunate and that we need to try to be kind and give when we can," her mother, Karina, was quoted as saying in CNN.
The little girl set up a stand on December 8 and spent her Sunday selling hot cocoa, cider, and cookies, the mother said, adding her daughter hopes that other students "can have a snack and lunch. If they don't, their tummies grumble".
But the little helper has bigger plans to help out several others kids. Hardee wants to raise enough so that she can pay off $6,373 lunch debts of thousands of students across the Vista Unified School District, Daily Mail reported.
