Treble for trainer Saeed

DUBAI - Khawlah, under Frankie Dettori, made all the running and held on courageously when challenged by the mount of Christophe Soumillon, Mahbooba to land the 2011 UAE Oaks Gr-3 and complete a treble for Godolphin trainer Saeed bin Suroor at Meydan Racecourse on Thursday.

The three-year-old Cape Cross filly broke well and went very quickly into the lead to take the small field of seven runners in a nice trip over the 1900m All-Weather surface.

Dettori, who completed a double in the Oaks night, said: “Everything went to a plan and she did that very nicely. It was a good performance and it would be nice to think she could be competitive in some good races in Europe.”

Trainer Saeed bin Suroor commented: “That has been a good evening and Khawlah is a filly we really like and will hopefully go to York for the Musidora Stakes. The horses have been running well throughout the Carnival and hopefully we can continue in similar form.”

Early in the night, the Italian jockey partnered Bay Willow to a comfortable victory in the 2200m Jaguar XK Trophy.

The four-year-old gelded son of former champion Singspiel was not among the front-runners to win the race. The fans were divided between Mike de Kock-trained Star Empire and Godolphin second runner, Prizefighting under Mickael Barzalona. But Dettori took everyone by surprise and stormed home ahead of the fast-finishing Meeriss, William Buic up.

The 1200m All-Weather Range Rover Trophy third race on the card attracted 12 sprinters. The Italian was then on the wrong one when his mount, Global City, was only able to chase home stable companion Charlie’s Moment. Mickael Barzalona was on the winner.

The victory took bin Suroor to 12 winners for the 2011 Carnival, three behind Mike de Kock who won the opening 2000m Jaguar XF Trophy with Wonder Lawn under Kevin Shea.

De Kock said: “This is probably his optimum trip around here and he picked up nicely. He is a tough and reliable performer.”

Mahmoud Al Zarooni saddled his seventh winner of the current Carnival when he combined to win the 1600m Listed Meydan Classic, on turf, with Ahmed Ajtebi performing the steering on Introvert. Ajtebi said: “It was a good run last time and we were very hopeful of reversing the Trial form over the extra distance. He ran on very strongly and should stay further.”

The Alan Jarvis-trained Navajo Chief enjoyed a change of luck in the concluding Range Rover Trophy on his fourth 2011 Carnival start and third on turf. Denied in a photo over course and distance on his penultimate start before a close fifth last week over 1400m, he denied Kavango in a driving finish.

Champion Trainer Ali Rashid Al Raihe enjoyed a treble last Thursday and was back in the winner’s enclosure after Mufarrh won the Jaguary XJ Trophy under Richard Hills who again stole a race by kicking for home 400m out.
