His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai was present to see Splash Point win under Mickael Barzalona and supply trainer Mahmood Al Zarooni with his first UAE Classic success.

The winner carries the colours of Shaikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum and was reversing 1400m Trial form with runner-up Zanzamar. Al Zarooni said: “That is a great feeling and I am delighted. I am so grateful to His Highness Shaikh Mohammed and everybody for this opportunity. Splash Point ran well first time and we were hoping for a big run. Mickael did everything right.”

For the second year running Skysurfers carried the Godolphin blue to victory in the Listed Firebreak Stakes under a jubilant Frankie Dettori who was always travelling strongly. The pair denied last year’s UAE 2000 Guineas and Derby winner Musir to the delight of trainer Saeed bin Suroor who said: “The horse had been working very well and seems to run best when fresh. We will probably wait until the (Dubai) World Cup night now and the Godolphin Mile.”

Trainers from the UK were in good form with the opening 1400m DUBAL Imtiaz Trophy, won by the Jamie Osborne-trained Rakaan who was produced with a telling late challenge by Ted Durcan. Osborne said: “There is a race for him next week and hopefully we will be back for that. It is my first winner here and a great night.”
