Fillies in line for success

DUBAI - Khawlah will be the one to beat in the UAE Derby Gr-2, the fourth on the card. Godolphin is represented by four runners, three of them from the Mahmoud Al Zaroonie yard while Saeed bin Suroor saddles bottom weight Khawlah, under Mixhael Barzalona.

Trainer Aiden O’Brien is double handed in the UAE Derby Group-2 which has attracted a strong full field of 14 runners under the starter’s orders. Alexander Pop, Jamie Spencer up, looks good to win the race if we are to believe in the authenticity of his form on paper.

“He is training well and did nothing wrong since he arrived in Dubai. He enjoyed the trip and seems to be in his best,” Spencer said after Thursday’s work. The colt was sent to Dandalk to run on the A/W track when he won easily and impressed his trainer.

But his job is not going to be easy at all in such a tough race which is contested over 1900m.

The race was a good preparation for the UAE Derby and the way in which the colt has won suggested he has the stamina to stay the extended distance.

First run in 2000, the 1900m UAE Derby has been dominated by Godolphin trainer Saeed bin Suroor and South African Mike de Kock who have won it six and five times respectively.

No filly has ever won this race, now run on the All-Weather, but, interestingly, both trainers saddle fillies this year. Bin Suroor’s Khawlah won the UAE Oaks, from De Kock’s Mahbooba who had previously won the UAE 1000 Guineas from stable companion Reem.

All three clash here and their form looks stronger than that of UAE 2000 Guineas winner Splash Point who beat De Kock’s re-opposing Zanzamar and Meydan Classic scorer Introvert.
