The last day of the Dubai International Film Festival ended on a high note, thanks to the red carpet filled with personalities from the galaxy far, far away. The latest film in the Star Wars movie franchise, Rogue One, was played for DIFF guests a day earlier than its release in UAE cinemas.
Suffice to say, Rogue One is a must-watch for Star Wars fans, and also provided a lot of motivation to see the rest of the Star Wars films, most notable of which is Episode IV: A New Hope, which premiered back in 1977.
On to the movie, the first and most obvious aspect noticeable in the film is the female lead, Jyn Erso, portrayed by Felicity Jones. Jones' character joins an exclusive club of Star Wars female leads which includes Carrie Fisher as Leia Organa and most recently, Daisy Ridley as Rey in The Force Awakens. Jones is joined by Diego Luna, Donnie Yen, Jiang Wen and British-Pakistani artist Riz Ahmed.
Story-wise, we love how Rogue One is both a deviation from the Star Wars formula but also is a clear nod to it. Easter eggs are rife all throughout the film, from cameo appearances of characters from the original saga, up to inside jokes which every fan could enjoy laughing at. It's not a gritty war film like advertised but more of a balance between drama, war film and the occasional comedic relief provided by K-2SO, the droid that accompanies our heroes throughout the journey.
Overall, the film is a treat for fans. It could have been paced differently, especially around the first act, but that is of little consequence.
See it this weekend. See it right now.
