Briefing newsmen prior to his country's first official National Day celebrations in the UAE, which took place on June 6, Lars-Erik Grundell, Sweden's Ambassador for UAE, Bahrain and Qatar, said that the embassy was trying to promote its presence in the country, focusing in particular on tourism, trade, and healthcare.

He said that since February last year, when the Swedish Embassy had opened in Abu Dhabi, diplomatic relations had also been developing at an excellent pace.

The UAE ranks third in the region as Sweden's trading partner, after Saudi Arabia and Iran. The Ambassador said that Swedish imports to the UAE accounted for approximately Dh1.2 billion, while Swedish exports from the UAE accounted for approximately Dh98 million. He pointed out that the tourism often provided a base link among the nations, opening doors for cooperation in other areas.

He noted that the recent participation of the UAE delegation in the International Tourism Exhibition in Sweden had generated a positive response.

He pointed out that 25 students from the UAE had been enrolled at the Sahlgrenska Academy in Sweden for higher education in the field of medicine, and hoped that continuing medical education could be a fertile area for developing relations.

R. Moussli, Senior Commercial Adviser at the embassy, said that about 1,000 Swedes lived in the UAE at present, with several major Swedish companies having a strong presence in the region.
