A political awakening for Emirati women is on the horizon.
And we have no hesitation in calling the President's decision to reserve 50 per cent of seats for women in the FNC a landmark move, a watershed in the history of the country. Women are set to legislate and govern; they will rise above the tokenism and symbolic gestures of representation to make a real difference when the FNC is formed next year.
A new dawn awaits and UAE women can now spread their political wings and nurture ambitions while taking their rightful place with the men. They will become a solid vote bank, and also part of the political elite. This is the march of democracy that demands that no gender be left behind.
The President deserves credit for this political reform, that follows several economic and social changes in the country. It is indeed a bold decision that has been borne out of a strong conviction that Emirati women need political power to achieve their potential and reach their goals.
This is a call to legislative action, and we are confident they will fulfil the confidence the leadership has reposed in them.
