September is back-to-school month and during this time of the year, things can get pretty hectic. With back-to-school season comes a new schedule and deadlines. School time means looking at purchasing a whole new variety of colourful, innovative and attractive stationery products; snazzy lunch packs with the little ones' favourite cartoon characters that inspire them to carry a desired homemade meal with place for quick snacks such as cereal bars and juice packs, as well as a cool water bottle that fits in.
A hearty breakfast is essential to begin the kids' day, as it keeps them energised throughout. It is also important to keep your child hydrated so ensure that they carry enough fluids, and eating a whole fruit is advisable too.
Parents and even older siblings need to educate the young ones about road safety rules, whether they take private vehicles or the school transport. Also, do not neglect minor cold cough or fever, and it is advisable to consult a doctor especially with the change of season around the corner.
Easy transition
Starting the new semester can be a time of great excitement as well as anxiety for both the parents and children. You can help calm your child's fears through these tips:
Reconnect with friends: For those studying together, a familiar friend can make all the difference. Try refreshing these relationships before school starts by scheduling a fun day at one of the many interactive gaming zones at The Dubai Mall or Dubai Festival City.
Go shopping: Going on a special shopping trip to get the latest class supply list gets the kids excited for school. Plus, having the right tools will make them feel prepared. While keeping basic needs in mind, a few splurges like a colourful notebook will make going back to school a lot more fun for them.
Ease into routine: Switching from the fun summer break to a school schedule can be stressful. Avoid first-day-of-school confusion by practicing the routine in advance. Set the alarm clock and go through the morning rituals. Routines often help children feel comfortable, and can make the first day of school go smoothly.
Prepare a balanced lunchbox
The start of the new academic year also means starting a new meal routine. Nutritious eating can often fall on the backburner when life gets busy. But no matter how healthy the lunchbox is, it won't provide any nutritional value if it doesn't get eaten! Hunger pangs can make it difficult for them to concentrate at school, so make sure to send the kids with healthy snacks that will keep them active throughout the academic hours.
To make the process more exciting for the little ones, pack a junk-food-free lunch the night before, and let the kids help. Getting them involved and showing them how to make a healthy lunch will go a long way in inculcating healthy eating habits in them. Plus, being prepared in advance is great as being rushed can lead you to grab pre-packaged foods, which are unhealthy.
Some healthy options for the lunchbox include snacks such as veggie sticks with hummus, apples and string cheese, grapes, apples, orange, or fresh fruit juices.
Another great option for lunch is wraps. They are easy to eat, can be filled with some of the kids' favourite ingredients, and are also individualised. Think of using grains, tender chicken pieces, spreads, potatoes or chopped veggies, and use wholegrain tortillas for a fulfilling meal.
Veggies are often overlooked in the lunchbox so try cutting up some carrot sticks or putting in a handful of cherry tomatoes. Always include fruits and veggies in your kids' lunch. Include a whole piece of apple, orange or peach or smaller pieces of grapes, strawberries, and blueberries. You can mix it up replacing the standard options with plums, kiwi or mango.
Also, try making it easier for them to eat these fruits as some schools offer students only a 15-minute break. So peel the oranges, put cubes of peaches in small containers, and remember to pack a fork.

Benefits of a healthy lunchbox
Intelligent kids: Research has found that eating a balanced diet goes a long way in improving cognitive performance.
Energy boost: A healthy lunch will keep the young ones feeling active all day and avoid the afternoon slump.
Maintain weight: Consuming nutritious foods and keeping processed foods far away ensures that children are not tempted by sugary delights and can be of a healthy weight.
Learn young: Children who have clean and green eating habits are more likely to maintain healthy lifestyles throughout adulthood.
Healthy body: A nutritious diet has numerous benefits including healthy bones, teeth, and immune function, among others.
