UAE beat Syria 2-0

AL AIN — UAE coach Srecko Katanec moved a step closer to what his squad for the Asian Cup to be held in Doha will look like after his men defeated Syria in a football friendly at the Khalifa bin Zayed Stadium in Al Ain on Sunday.

Katanec gave his young guns a run before bringing on his experienced men like Ismail Matar, Abdulla Mousa, Saeed Al Kathiri and the likes. UAE won 2-0. Substitute Saeed Al Kathiri scored in the 63rd minute and substitute Theyab Awana added the second in the final minute.

Katanec went in with a starting XI consisting of goalkeeper Ali Kasheif, Under-20 captain Hamdan Al Kamali, Yousef Jaber, Khalid Sabeel, Waleed Abbas, Amer Abdulrahman, Ismail Al Hammadi, Amer Mubarak, Omar Abdulrahman, Mohammed Al Shehhi and Ahmed Khalil.

Ahmed Khalil missed a couple of opportunities before Katanec brought in the experienced Saeed Al Kathiri on the hour mark. And the Al Wahda player put the hosts ahead in the 63rd minute off a cross from Khalid Sabeel. Substitute Theyab Awana scored the second in the final minute of the game.

The squad had returned from a week-long training camp in Oman. UAE play their second and final friendly against Australia on Wednesday which will be the final run for them before they play their first game against North Korea on January 11. UAE are placed in the ‘Group of the Death’ Group D along with Iran, Iraq and North Korea. UAE meet Iran on January 15 and lock horns against Iran on January 19.
