Rosberg quickest in first Europe practice

German Nico Rosberg topped the times in the opening free practice for the European GP, the ninth race of the 19-leg Formula One world championship to be held.

The 24-year-old Mercedes driver posted a time of 1min 41.175secs as drivers again struggled for grip and concentrated on laying down rubber at the dusty Valencia street circuit.

British duo Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button were second and third quickest in their McLaren cars ahead of Pole Robrt Kubica in a Renault.

Felipe Massa was fifth quickest in the first of the heavily upgraded Ferraris followed by Red Bull pair, German Sebastian Vettel and Australian Mark Webber.

German Michael Schumacher finished the 90-minute session eighth quickest in the second Mercedes ahead of Spaniard Fernando Alonso in the second Ferrari.

Brazilian Rubens Barichello was tenth fastest for Williams.
