Dubai Rally route to test drivers’ skills

dubai — The Dubai International Rally will run in December with a completely revised route featuring all new stages, and the promise of an exciting climax to the 2010 FIA Middle East Championship.

The new stages are all fast flowing with short “technical” sections to test the drivers and machinery, and they will be in use for the first time when the competitive action takes place on December 3 and 4.

Smooth and forgiving desert trails in the Al Dhaid area have been carefully selected with the aim to get the maximum number of competitors to the finish.

The service park will be based on an asphalt surface and is conveniently located close to the stages, resulting in a very compact event format.

Assistance packages are available for all competitors who are asked to contact the Automobile and Touring Club of the UAE (www.atcuae.ae), the rally organisers, for details, and for other information.

“The Dubai Rally has a great tradition and reputation and I am confident that the new stages will prove to be very popular with both competitors and spectators alike”, said the FIA vice president Mohammed Ben Sulayem, who is also the ATCUAE President.

“We look forward again to a very competitive event, with UAE drivers facing competitors from across the Middle East, and overseas, to round off the 2010 FIA Middle East Rally Championship,” Sulayem added.

Running traditionally over the UAE National Day holiday weekend, the event will have a ceremonial start on December 2 from the Old Town area of Dubai.

Over the following two days six stages of approximately 22 kms each will all be run twice to produce a route of 280 kms. Qatar’s Misfer Al Marri currently holds a ten-point lead over the UAE’s Sheikh Khalid Al Qassimi in the 2010 FIA Middle East Rally Championship, with this week’s Syrian Rally to be followed next month by the penultimate round in Cyprus.
