The etisalat-Rangoli Gulf 2011 was the first inter-school team competition and TV show for Indian schools to be organised in the country. Spearheaded by Symphony TV, the cultural programme provided a platform to talented children from 15 schools in the country. In fact, over 400 students participated in the competition.

The grand finale of the two-month celebrations took place at the Meydan Hotel in Dubai on January 12.

The winners of the competition were announced by South Indian actor Mohanlal. Indian School, Al Ain bagged the first prize, closely followed by Delhi Private School, Dubai. The third prize was shared by Our Own Indian School, Al Quoz, Dubai and Gulf Model School, Dubai.

Also, Millennium School Dubai won the best all-rounder prize and Kindergarten Starters, Dubai, won the special jury award.

While announcing the results, Mohanlal said the spirit of the competition is not about winning but participation and celebration.

Director of Symphony TV Krishna Kumar said the essence of the competition is to celebrate team spirit.

“I notice a growing trend of students not competing in the right spirit. It has become cut throat. Also, the ongoing reality TV show culture presents a very dramatic state of events. Students are competing for their lives, which I believe is unhealthy. The whole point of the competition is for students to have a good time and to instil the spirit of participation in children,” he said.

Senior school supervisor of Millennium School, Dubai, Jospeh Khiyalie said, “The old practice of confining teaching to classrooms is gone. Events like this are highly appreciated. Encouraging co-curricular activities is very important because students become all-rounders. They grow up to be healthy individuals. In fact, the current CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) syllabus also encourages co-scholastic areas where life skills are given greater importance”.

The organisers plan to take the event across the Gulf region eventually and Season 2 will be premiering in the months of May and June.

The event was also attended by CEO of e-Vision Humaid Rashid Sahoo; Indian film director Priyadarshan; other South Indian film actors Mukesh, Bhavana and Suraj Venjarammoodu; playback singer M.G. Sreekumar; former Member of Indian Parliament P. V. Abdul Wahab; managing director of NMC Group Dr B. R. Shetty; director - Asian Schools, GEMS Education Dr Farooq Wasil; and executive director of EMKE Group Ashraf Ali among others.
