It is a sobering thought that so many of us use the VPN (virtual private network) option without realising that we are breaking the law and leaving ourselves liable for massive fines. While the vast majority take the VPN side door to connect, it is largely for making phone calls to friends and loved ones in the home country. To that extent perhaps there is a certain tolerance since it is a benign usage, but using it for telephony is still not legal. The worrying part is when VPNs are used to create trouble, foment outrage, even engage in promoting terror and dissent or stir disaffection in any community or group by concealing one's identity or hiding behind the VPN. In such a case, that person or set of persons can be seen as a threat to the security of the public.
While scams and dirty deals are also integral to misuse, the inclination to get onto these platforms to gamble in the hope of making money or engage in sleazy offers and even well-organised rackets also exist. People find it difficult to differentiate between legitimate use of VPN by financial institutions and their personal indulgences often labour under the misapprehension that with VPN they cannot be traced. This is not essentially true and those who are potentially in activities likely to cause harm can have a trace placed on them. What is more, far too many VPN sites lure people into their clutches by promising them anonymity that is not essentially true. Think about that before you download your next not-so-legal proxy.
