The clerical-military regime in Iran managed to put a lid on protests in the country through brutal tact in the past. Some 1,500 people were killed in demonstrations late last year, a number that is often ignored as the regime continues its reign of terror in the Middle East through its network of proxies that do its bidding. That reign of state-sponsored terror may be coming to an end. The lies that were bandied about for the sake of the so-called revolution will not work anymore. It has been a worthless cause, the violence, the sectarianism, and the hatred that emanated from the regime that did as it pleased with the economy and the aspirations of the Iranian people who deserve better than these theocratic leaders who took charge by force four decades ago. Their time may be up and their blunders will not be hidden any longer from public view. One such blunder was the shooting down of the Ukrainian airliner by accident last week, a fact that Tehran denied until Saturday.
The regime has lost control over the situation and cannot control the minds of the people who have suffered the most from decades of aggression. An economy that was primed for war has achieved little on the ground. Iran's oil cannot be sold in the market because of sanctions that have crippled the economy. More are on their way as the regime plays hide-and-seek from the world and the people. In a country that is in a perpetual state of war, nerves are frayed, tensions run high, and terrible mistakes like friendly fire can happen. Sadly, it claimed innocent lives. Apologies alone will not suffice. The deadly act demands accountability. The people are for it, but the question is, will the regime give it to them. An eyewash can be expected in this scenario as has always been the case. Some lowly military official will be the fall guy and will be sent to the gallows or the firing squad. But the missile attack has awakened the people of Iran, it has stoked their conscience, which is a good sign. A war economy will shoot itself to death. It cannot sustain itself, it is morally unacceptable, bankrupt and should be shown the door. The seeds have been sown through the death of innocents. Iran saw a sectarian revolution 40 years ago. It now needs to put an end to the hate that is the road to damnation.
