An Egyptian man who works in the customer service at an exchange office said during the investigation that the defendant came into their outlet in June to convert 100,000 RUB into dirhams, which is equivalent to about Dh10,000. He said that they were earlier notified to be cautious about fake Russian notes by their main branch. By checking the bills the Russian gave to him, the witness realised they were counterfeit. He informed his superior and the police. A police sergeant said that the accused was held back by the exchange outlet security staff by the time the police reached the place.

The defendant admitted to the sergeant that he and another compatriot suspect, at large, smuggled the fake notes through the Dubai International Airport. They hid the notes under their pants and wrapped them around their legs with adhesive tapes. They had brought the fake notes from their home country. A bag with the same fake notes was seized from the accused.
