A gold trader in Abu Dhabi has been accused of selling fake gold jewellery products bearing trademarks of international brands. The Abu Dhabi Court of First Instance heard that the Asian owner of the gold jewellery shop was prosecuted after authorities caught him selling the fakes.
Prosecutors said the bogus jewellery bore international trademarks of two big brands. The police had seized the counterfeit jewellery from the shop.
Investigations revealed that the outlet was hiding some of the fake gold jewellery in secret places behind wooden shelves.
A police officer said that authorities received information from agents of a popular international brand about the commercial fraud which affected their business.
A team tasked with investigating the case raided the shop after confirming that the outlet dealt in fakes. Authorities said the owner wanted to earn huge profits illegally.
Prosecutors had charged the shop owner with forgery and commercial fraud. The trader denied the charges in court.
The trial has been adjourned until May.
