A joyride in a car driven by a 14-year-old boy ended in a tragedy when he rammed the vehicle into a tree, killing three children and injuring two others. According to sources, the impact of the crash was such that the car split into two.
The accident that claimed the lives of three teenagers - in the age group of 14 to 16 - took place on the new Corniche Street in Khor Fakkan around 6am on Thursday. The sources said the children - living in the same neighbourhood - had gone on a joyride in the early morning. The car's registration had also expired.
Preliminary investigations showed that speeding and not paying attention on the road were the reasons behind the accident.
The boy who was driving the car, along with two other passengers including a 10-year-old boy, survived the deadly accident with moderate to minor injuries.
"The vehicle suddenly swerved off the road while moving on a narrow bend, and rammed into a kerb before crashing into a tree on the road median," the source said.
On being alerted about the accident, the operations room at the Eastern Region Police Department dispatched a team to the site, a police source said. The injured were administered first-aid, while the dead were shifted to a hospital morgue. The police are investigating.
