The accident took place on the Dubai-Al Ain Road in October and resulted in the death of the Emirati man, 24. Dubai Traffic Chief Prosecutor Salah Bu Farroucha Al Felasi said the accused, 27, would also be prosecuted for not stopping after the fatal accident, as well as causing material damage to another’s property.

The owner of the vehicle, driven by the Pakistani, an Indian man, 52, will also be prosecuted for failing to cooperate with the authorities after failing to give information about the defendant. A third Indian, 50, will also face prosecution after it was revealed he repaired the damage caused to the vehicle, without acquiring the authorisation of the Licensing Department.

After inspecting the scene of the accident, Bur Dubai police said an unknown vehicle swerved suddenly to the right and ran over the victim, who was standing on the shoulder of the road refilling his car with fuel. The impact of the hit was so severe and caused the victim’s body to be thrown over 19 metres up the road. The victim died on the spot.

The Traffic Prosecution began investigating the accident as soon as it happened and Dubai CID officers worked hard to catch the person responsible.

The passenger, who was travelling with the victim at the time of the accident, said the other vehicle was a medium-sized van but could not identify what colour or plate number it had.

The police caught the first defendant after spotting the damaged vehicle in a car workshop in Al Aweer. Its front and side mirror bore crash marks. The first accused admitted that he caused the accident and alleged he did not stop as he felt sleepy and exhausted.

The second accused admitted that he failed to cooperate with the investigation by not providing information on who was driving his vehicle. He admitted to telling the driver to get the car repaired at a car workshop by the third defendant. They were caught before completing the repair work.

The prosecution charged all three and referred them to court.

According to the modification of the Traffic Law of 2007, shall be jailed for no more than one year and/or fined no less than Dh5,000 anyone whose vehicle caused an accident and failed to provide helpful information in the investigation.
