Missing Pakistani boy found dead
The family of Pakistani teen Ammar, who had been missing since Monday, plunged into grief when his body was fished out from the Dubai Creek by a municipality worker. He had apparently died on the day he went missing, according to initial reports from the police.
Seventeen-year-old Ammar’s body was mutilated since it had remained submerged in water for more than two days. His parents, however, identified him from the clothes he was wearing when he left.
The cause of the death is yet to be determined.
As reported on Thursday, Ammar Atiuddin, who had come on a visit to Dubai with his mother, had simply walked out of his father’s office in Dubai’s Gold Souk saying he would be back soon. When he did not return after a few hours, his parents panicked and lodged a missing person report with the Naif police station only to finally find their son’s body in the police morgue.
“My son was a haafiz (person who has memorised the Holy Quran by heart) and was a very obedient boy,” said Ammar’s mother. “I did not want to come to Dubai but Ammar insisted,” she said while sobbing uncontrollably. “Please pray for his soul,” she added.
Ammar’s father, Atiuddin Moinudeen, said: “I can’t even imagine what might have happened to him.” Heartbroken, Moinudeen said he would leave the UAE. “I no longer want to stay here.” Ammar’s siblings have also been informed and are devastated upon hearing the news.
Ammar came to Dubai on April 27 for a month-long visit to his father who owns a jewellery shop in Deira. He went missing after he stepped out of his father’s office at 10am on May 21. He had no friends or relatives in Dubai and was not carrying any mobile phone when he went out.
Major Abdullah Al Mazyouz, director of the ports police station, said a municipality worker informed the police after he saw a body in the creek on Tuesday. Primary findings showed that the boy was fully dressed and the face was decomposed and he might have drowned 24 hours before he was found.
He also said that DNA tests will be carried out to rule out suspicion. The body will be handed over after all legal procedures are completed and that could take up to 15 days.
The sad and unexplained end to a young and budding life also touched a chord with Khaleej Times readers who sent several condolence messages.
“His death will remain a mystery for now,” said the grieving father. Ammar will be buried in Karachi.
