The Abu Dhabi Criminal Court which handed down the verdict, found him guilty, slapped him with a fine of Dh50,000 and made an order for his deportation after his jail term.

According to court records, the public prosecution in Abu Dhabi referred the accused to the criminal court after being caught at the Abu Dhabi International Airport upon arrival from his home country.

The police arrested him with 2.2kg of methamphetamine stashed in his bag.

On interrogation, he confessed to the charges, and said that a friend in his home country had offered him Dh800 to take the bag to Abu Dhabi.

He also admitted to having taken drugs in his home country before leaving for the UAE.

In the dock, the accused reversed his statement, and denied his knowledge about the drugs in the bag, and asked for an acquittal due to lack of criminal intention.

The court, however did not consider his defence, explaining that it was content with his confession at the public prosecution of possessing and smuggling drugs. — news@khaleejtimes.com
