According to the Abu Dhabi Police, two women, an Emirati and an Iraqi, lured another Iraqi woman with the promise that they would get her naturalised as a UAE citizen against Dh2.846 million.

The Abu Dhabi Public Prosecution ordered the detention of two women identified as F.A.G. (UAE national) and A.M.S. (Iraqi) for conning the woman.

“In 2011, the victim met the first defendant, an ex-colleague of hers. The family had lived in the UAE for a long time. The family had, in fact, applied for citizenship earlier. She asked the defendant if she knew someone who could help with the citizenship,” the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department said in a statement on Sunday.

According to the department, the first defendant told the victim that she was working with the authority responsible for issuing citizenships. She also convinced the victim that she was a member of a top confidential committee tasked with issuing citizenship and that she would follow up her case personally.

She also asked her victim that in addition to personal photographs, passport copies and other procedures, citizenship required an amount of Dh600,000.

The first defendant received all the required documents, including the amount in full, but continued asking for more fees to finalise the application transaction.

“Both the women asked her for more money till the total amount paid by the victim reached Dh2,846,000. But that was not enough for them and they asked for more threatening that she and her family would be sent out of the country if she refused to pay,” said the statement.

When the victim could not pay anything more since she had used all her savings and obtained bank loans, she decided at last to file a complaint against the two defendants. Both were arrested and referred to the Public Prosecution which ordered their detention for seven days pending investigations.
