A five-year-old boy sustained severe injuries after he fell from the window of an apartment here at the Maamura area.
The Arab toddler, identified only as A.A.A., was discovered by one of the residents of the same building who alerted the central operations room of the RAK police.
Lt-Col Waleed Mohammed Juma Al Nuaimi, manager of Criminal Investigation Department Maamura police station, said traffic patrols, an ambulance and paramedics rushed to the site, but the boy was already shifted to the nearest hospital by his parents in their car.
"Initial investigations show that the boy was home alone and his 35-year-old father, A.A.A., and 32-year-old mother, R.G.A., were not present when he fell off the window of their apartment in the second floor."
Medical reports show that the boy received several injuries and multiple fractures in different parts of his body, he added.
"The file of the case has been referred to the public prosecution for legal action as due."
This kind of family negligence is rare in the emirate, Lt-Col Nuaimi said.
"Parents, particularly mother, take full responsibility ethically and legally for their children's safety."
Parents should keep an eye on their children, especially the young ones, he underlined.
"Toddlers should never be left home alone as they can be liable to fatal accidents any time."
Late in December 2012, a 23-month-old boy was seriously injured after falling from an apartment in the fourth floor at the Nakhilat area.
Investigations showed that the almost two-year-old baby made his way to a window next to the bed on which his mother was sleeping.
He then opened it, lost balance and feel to the ground.
Lt-Col Nuaimi urged parents, especially living in high-rise buildings, should install safety devices and bars on their balconies and windows to protect their children from falling.
"Young children should never be left unattended."
