Arab youth charged for assaulting RAK official

Ras Al Khaimah - The young man admitted to having tried to assault the manager of the government department because of some disputes over an official transaction.

An Arab young man has landed in a court after being accused of assaulting the manager of a government department here.
As per court records, the case dates back to the end of August when the accused dashed into the office of the manager and tried to assault him.
The suspect also tried to attack another government employee who tried to calm him down and let him out of the office.
The manager alerted the RAK Police when the young man refused to leave the office, and he was taken in their custody. The suspect was later referred to the RAK Public Prosecution for legal action.
The young man admitted to having tried to assault the manager of the government department because of some disputes over an official transaction.
In his plea, he said he suffered mental illness and that he earlier needed to be admitted to a hospital in the country.
The case was referred to the Ras Al Khaimah Misdemeanour court which ordered adjournment of the lawsuit to October 5 to issue its verdict.
Mohammed Fawzi, a legal adviser, told Khaleej Times: A jail term and a fine or either penalty shall be slapped against whoever insults or uses abusive language against a public officer on duty.
"Whoever assaults a public employee on duty or resists him with violence shall suffer a jail term of not more than two years or a fine of not more than Dh20,000, as per article (249) of the federal punitive law No 3 for the year 1987."
A jail term of not less than six months shall be ordered if the assault or resistance is associated with beating, he added.
"The public officer is not only protected against assault but also against abuse or swearing."
