Defence lawyer Nashwa Al Qubaisi, appointed by the Ministry of Justice, requested the court to defer the hearing to allow her to visit the convicts, study the case and file her pleas in the next court session. Article 4 of the UAE’s penal code stipulates the appointment of a lawyer paid by the state to defend suspects who cannot afford the fees.

The court had ordered the confiscation of all arms and ammunition used in hijacking of the ship east of Oman, en route from Australia to Jebel Ali on April 1 last year.

The ship was freed in a joint operation by the UAE’s Anti-Terrorist Special Forces with the US Fifth Fleet. —
