A senior officer on Wednesday said the detainees, including 27 African and 13 Asian domestic helps, were spotted at the areas of Al Mutina, Al Manama, Al Wahida and Hor Al Anz.

“As such, the number of the illegal residents, workers and domestic helps caught this year so far has gone up to 5,612,” said Lt-Col Khalaf Al Ghaith, Assistant Director-General for Investigation and Illegals Follow-up Sector. An earlier batch of 20 illegal African maids was nabbed on June 2 at Fareej Al Marr in Dubai.

The maids have allegedly absconded from their sponsors and worked with employers other than theirs in violation of labour and residency rules and regulations. “Having been alerted by our undercover agents about some illegal domestic helps working at certain areas in the emirate, we launched raids and arrested them red-handed,” he said.

Under the UAE Labour Law, holders of employment visa from other sponsors are not allowed to work part-time for any event unless permitted by the sponsor. Visit visa holders are not allowed to work there. “The public are highly urged to immediately report any illegal residents or absconders they know or come across to the Section at toll free number: 8005111,” he said.

Late last month, the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs in Dubai announced that it has detained 5,552 illegal residents and workers in the first five months of the year.
