The accident took place when passersby gathered near the building to watch the collapse of a scaffolding erected for the maintenance works. While the people stood watching it, a small portion of the building’s front collapsed, which caused the casualties.
Brigadier Khalil Ibrahim Al Mansouri, Director of the General Department of Criminal Investigation, said that on Friday at 11.30am, the police received information about the accident.
The police patrols rushed to the site and found that the company responsible the maintenance of the company had erected the scaffolding to paint the building’s front portion, but did not make sure that it was properly fixed. As it was a Friday, there was no worker on the scaffolding, which avoided further tragedy.
However, there were a few onlookers who gathered to check what was happening, after some concrete fell on the passersby. Two of them died on the spot while the third one, who was severely injured, was rushed to the Intensive Care Unit of the Rashid Hospital.
Al Mansouri said that four of the company officials, including the supervisor who was responsible of maintenance works, were arrested. The Safety and Security team of the Dubai Municipality checked the safety condition of the building, he said, adding that those who are responsible for the accident will face legal action.
Al Mansouri called on the public to be careful in such occasions, and said that curiosity and negligence have caused the death of the two. The number of casualties could have been more if it was a working day, due to the fall of the scaffolding which was fixed in a wrong way.
Colonel Ali Ghanim, Director of the Bur Dubai Police Station, said that the deceased and the injured are Asians.
