The Australian opener fell to a bat-pad catch off the bowling of spinner Harbhajan Singh to depart after a marathon 338-ball knock that included 10 boundaries.

Tim Paine (36) and Mitchell Johnson (9) were the not out batsmen at the break.

Resuming on the overnight score of 224-5, both Watson and Paine played with caution, negating the threat posed by Zaheer Khan’s reverse swing.

Watson, who featured in a 141-run stand with skipper Ricky Ponting on Friday, added 53 runs with Paine before Harbhajan got the better of him.

Paine started slowly but gradually grew in confidence, helping himself to the occasional boundary.
