Van Zyl, who recently led South Africa to a drawn test series in India, was appointed on an interim basis after Mickey Arthur resigned as coach last month.
The 48-year-old Van Zyl will be in charge through the 2011 World Cup, due to take place on the sub-continent in February and March next year.
Graeme Smith will continue to captain South Africa for the same period while Jacques Kallis was appointed vice captain in all forms of the game.
After a CSA board meeting, chief executive Gerald Majola was tasked with compiling a new management structure which will be implemented after the World Cup.
“CSA wants to take time to formalise a management structure that supports excellence and innovation,” CSA president Mtutuzeli Nyoka said in a statement.
“At this time, we are of the opinion that Corrie van Zyl be kept on as interim coach, until the end of the 2010/11 season, to take us through an incredibly busy period for the Proteas,” he added.
A new selection panel comprising the convenor of selectors, a high performance representative and the national coach and captain will also be chosen, with the process beginning immediately.
The former selection panel, headed by convenor Mike Proctor, was sacked in January.
Until the new panel can be set up an interim one consisting of Majola, Van Zyl and batting consultant Kepler Wessels will continue to act in that capacity.
