This is the first time that the Abu Dhabi-based academy are going to play in an Asian country after reciprocal visits to the United Kingdom during the past three summers.
The touring side will play four friendly games during their tour against Malaysian development teams at the Bayuemas Oval in Kuala Lumpur. It will be 40-over-a-side matches.
The opening match is against the Victoria Institute on July 26. It will be followed by games against Kajang High School (July 27), Heritage Club of Bangladesh (July 28) and the University Kabangsaan (July 29).
The academy team will be led by Jawad Qazi, an experienced left hand top order batsman who also bowls right arm medium pace.
The rest of the team are all under the age of 16 and includes two members of the side — wicketkeeper-batsman Shivank Vijaykumar and all-rounder Moaaz Qazi — have represented Emirates Cricket Board team in the division-1 domestic competitions.
“It will be a good opportunity for the young players to gain experience in Asian conditions where they will be playing for the first time,” said Qazi Ayub, head coach of the academy, who accompanied the team as manager.
“The boys have practiced hard for this tour and should come out with experience of playing in different conditions. The teams they are pitted against are development teams of Malaysia trained by overseas coaches. These kinds of tours also help build bridges between the two countries and develop cricketing ties. It is also a testimony to the success of previous tours to the UK made by our academy,” he added.
The tour is supported by the Abu Dhabi Cricket Council (ADCC) with Etihad Airways as the official airline.
Team: Jawad Qazi (Captain), Shivank Vijaykumar, Moaaz Qazi, Shaheer Jazil, Bilal Passela, Sriram Balaguru, Yasir Mohammad, Anson Quadros, Bikramjeet Singh, Adil Aga, Sohail Asghar, Sagar Sharma, Qazi Ayub (Manager).
