When Pakistan restricted India to a below par 260-9 on a batting-friendly Mohali wicket, it looked like Pakistan were destined to change their pathetic record against India in World Cups, but the hosts retained their unbeaten run by registering a29-run victory. When Wahab Riaz picked up his maiden five-wicket haul, it seemed India were destined to go out but the much-maligned Indian bowlers held their nerve to fashion an incredible victory against Pakistan.
Yuvraj, who had a memorable tournament picking up four man-of-the-match wards, had to go for a duck, but hit back in style through his bowling and led the team to an excellent victory.
When Mahendra Singh Dhoni included Ashish Nehara and Munaf Patel in the final eleven for the semi-final clash, many thought the Indian captain had erred in his strategy. But Dhoni had the last laugh with Munaf picking up two for 40 and Nehra ending up with figures of 2-33.
Pakistan won their matches on the strength of their bowlers and their batsmen were not upto the mark when they were provided with a tough task.
Besides, their batsmen had yet to score a century in this World Cup and their abysmal form hurt them in a crucial game, paving their ouster from the World Cup.
Despite scoring a below par 260 on a batting-friendly Mohali wicket, the Indian bowlers delivered the knockout punch in the crucial encounter by restricting the opposition.
Earlier a career-best 5-46 from Wahab Riaz helped Pakistan restrict India to 260-9 in 50 overs. Riaz made the crucial breakthroughs whenever India threatened to take control of the game.
When Virender Sehwag was at the crease, it looked like India would easily score more than 300, but his dismissal by Riaz, brought Pakistan back in to the game.
The left-arm pacer struck again taking the wickets of Virat Kohli and Yuvraj Singh in successive deliveries in the 26th over.
Riaz, who took a wicket in his first over, on Wednesday surpassed his previous best of three for 22 against Bangladesh in Dhaka three years ago.
Sachin Tendulkar, meanwhile led a charmed life and scored 85 to lend some respectability to the Indian total. Pakistan fielders offered him chances on 27, 45, 70 and 81, as he rode his luck before giving the wicket to Saeed Ajmal.
