The 34,000-capacity stadium will host the hotly-anticipated on June 9
In the second staging of the Khaleej Times-sponsored competition, three groups of four teams will compete from August 5th-21st, with the winners pocketing Dh15,000 and the runners-up taking home Dh10,000.
Prizes shall also be handed out to the best behaved participants (Dh1,000), the player of the tournament (Dh1,000), the best batsman (Dh750) and bowler (Dh750), as well as accolades for individuals with the most fours (Dh500) and sixes (Dh500) overall.
“It’s an immense pleasure for us to commence the cricket season with such a tournament,” said Abdul Rehman Falaknaz, a partner at Dubai Sports City and chairman of the Dubai Cricket Council. “I’m glad we’re starting off with the Danube Ramadan T20 Cup, which is a format we all love; it’s fast, quick and entertaining.
“This tournament will give opportunity to show off the cricketing skills available locally, which we could use in future for our teams as well.”
He added: “The Dubai International Cricket Stadium is one of the best venues in the world.
“It’s proven that as we’ve already had international tournaments here, with more to come – Insh’Allah – in October and January. Our outstanding cricketing facilities at the stadium provide a great location for the best teams to be able to play throughout the summer months.”
The top two outfits from the respective qualifying pools will progress through to the knockout phase, where the outright victors in Groups A and C shall automatically make it through to the semi-finals.
The XI that prevailed in Group B will have to take on the runner-ups from C for the right to play their A counterparts in the last four, with the C summit-sitters awaiting either the runners-up in A or B in the opposite half of the draw.
It promises to be an exciting 12 days of competitive cricket then, with representatives from title sponsors Danube equally as enthused about what lies ahead.
Anis Sajan, the company’s managing director, said: “Danube has always been associated with cricket, but this is the first time we’ve been associated with an outdoor cricket event, which makes me very happy.
“We are very proud and privileged to be a sponsor of this event. I wish all the best to all of the cricket sides and may the best team win.”
First-class cricketers from the Indian subcontinent are expected to be invited over to the emirate for the event, where every match will take place under lights and the ‘Ring of Fire’ at Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
