Durham, bidding to become the first side to win three straight English titles since Yorkshire in the 1960s, dismissed Hampshire for 298 in the visitors’ second innings.

That left Durham needing 260 for victory and they reached that tagrget thanks mainly to Kyle Coetzer’s 72.

Yorkshire stayed top of the table after a draw away to Kent.

In the Second Division, in-form Australian batsman and Derbyshire captain Chris Rogers made an unbeaten 51 as the Midlands side defeated Glamorgan by a convincing eight-wicket margin.

Elsehwere Stephen Peters’s unbeaten 183 was the centrepiece of Northamptonshire’s six-wicket win over Middlesex.

Meanwhile Surrey, despite 82 from Mark Ramprakash and three wickets from ex-England spinner Gareth Batty against his old side, drew with Worcestershire who clung on with two wickets standing.
