The tournament begins from July 29 and this is the second year that the Al Aqili Group are sponsoring the tournament, which is held during the Holy Month of Ramadan.

“Before we had a four-month break between two seasons. This time, the break was only for a month and a half. The way it is going, I don’t think we will have a break in the near future,” Wajahat Husain, the President of the Abu Dhabi Cricket Council (ADCC), said.

“The Ramadan Twenty20 tournament is truly the mantle piece in the calendar. And it is also the largest and the richest one, in terms of prize money. Also, international players will be taking part in the tournament. The cricketing fraternity in Abu Dhabi is blessed to have such a sponsor. This tournament is a platform to develop discipline in the youth,” he added.

Mohammad Saeed Al Aqili, the vice chairman of the Al Aqili Group said that cricket was one of the healthiest sports and it was great to have a tournament during the Holy Month of Ramadan.

“We want to share the beauty of the sport and the good health that comes with it. Cricket is one of the healthiest sports. I want to thank the ADCC who are committed to support you all. Nothing is better than having a sport during the Holy Month of Ramadan,” Mohammad Saeed Al Aqili said.

Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) chief Dilawar Mani said that it was a great when a sponsor came back to support the tournament again.

“I want to thank the Al Aqili Group for supporting the inaugural tournament of the new season. We have had 550 games played in a season and 200 of them in the stadium. But nothing is more significant than the opener of the season. From the ECB’s perspective, it is great when a sponsor comes back to support the tournament for a second consecutive year,” said Mani.

A total of 47 games will be played and all the games will be supervised by ADCC’s experienced umpires and match referees. Twenty teams are in the fray and they have been divided into four groups of five teams. The group matches will be played on a league basis and the two highest placed teams from each group will qualify for the knockout stage.

The winners will be richer by Dh20,000, while the runners-up will get Dh12,000. There are also individual awards for man of the final, man of the semi-finals, man of the quarter-finals apart from the man of the tournament, best bowler and best batsman.

Two games will be played every evening. Overseas players will be allowed to play without any restrictions to enhance the competitiveness of the tournament. However, to qualify to play in the knockout stage, a players must have played at least one round match.
