While the National Vaccination Programme is giving new hopes and optimism, doctors have warned the public against letting their guards down.

Dr Biji Bob Thomas, internal medicine specialist, Aster Clinic – Abu Shagara, said people must remain vigilant and continue to practice precautionary measures like wearing masks, maintaining social distancing, avoiding gatherings etc.

“The vaccine drive should not give people a sense of false security. The whole exercise of vaccination works effectively only if we continue to adhere to rules and lessen the spread till the entire community is vaccinated,” he said.

Dr Maisaa Al Sulaiman, family medicine specialist, Burjeel Specialty Hospital – Sharjah, stressed that the pandemic is not yet over and precautionary measures are required even after vaccination.

“Some people may ignore the protective measures either because they feel that the vaccine is enough or because they think that the pandemic is over. Wearing masks is important during this pandemic because the main entry of the Covid-19 virus is through the nose, that is why social distancing and the wearing mask is a crucial factor for preventing the spread of the virus and protecting ourselves and others as well. Hand washing routine is really important and people should keep following that not only as a protective measure of Covid-19 virus only but also for many other viruses,” Dr Maisaa added.
