In a touching show of solidarity, the Abu Dhabi Police joined citizens and expats as they sang the UAE National Anthem from their balconies during the curfew hours.

Ever since the start of the nationwide National Disinfection Programme, residents have been clapping and cheering, and singing the national anthem as a show of gratitude to authorities for fighting the spread of Covid-19.

In a video that has gone viral, Abu Dhabi Police officers are seen moved by the expression of gratitude shown by the community, mostly children. They assured residents that together they will overcome the challenges of the pandemic.

A police spokesperson said: "It was heartwarming to see citizens and expats united in singing the national anthem. The police joined them to encourage and thank the participants for supporting the #StayHome campaign."

Citizens praised the work done by the local authorities. "I haven't seen the police so animated. The people here are showing their love and support for the nation in such testing times," said Ayman Al Balushi, a national.

When Sheikh Mohamed got emotional

Last week, reacting to a video of residents singing the anthem, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, got emotional.

"The UAE is proud of our citizens and residents living on our soil. We are proud they (residents) share with us our identity. I was moved to tears when I heard our residents chanting the national anthem of the UAE on social media platforms as the National Disinfection Programme was being carried out nationwide," Sheikh Mohamed said.
